Acrylic or "plastics" has been around since the late 1930's. It is resistant to weather, which means it can withstand some of the damaging affects of sunlight and outdoor weathering. It has brilliant clarity like glass. It's smooth and easy to clean when the right cleaning techniques are used. Plexiglas, which is a registered trademark of Elf Atochem S.A. is as crystal clear as optical glass. It has greater impact resistance than all types of glass. Acrylic is by far the most widely used plastic because of cost and usefulness.

However, when acrylic is exposed to extreme hot and cold outdoor conditions, acrylic will expand and contract. If you plan to put your aviary outdoors, we recommend that your acrylic be placed in a channel frame. This type of construction allows the acrylic the room that is needed to expand and contract. If your project requires a product much stronger than Acrylic, look at PETG or LEXAN.
